ARE THE 10 COMMANDMENTS THE BASIS OF CIVILIZATION?
A lot of people don't like the law. These same ones do not say that the commandment on murder is done away. But on the whole, those that do away with the law are shortsighted, as the law is good for the protection of society as a whole. The law is one of the foundations of civilization, and those that commit the crimes of murder, bearing false witness, and theft, which are commandments, are criminally liable in our modern society.
"Thou shalt not bear false witness" is perjury, or lying under oath. Many people think that the command is not to lie, but it is actually not to lie under oath as a witness. Although we know we should not lie either.
God made men in his own image, and He is the creator of the law. If not for God and His laws, statutes and judgments, men would be as animals. Taking what they wanted by force, as criminals do. But think about it, if everyone kept God's law and the intent of it, what peace there would be in the world. Imagine what a utopia it would be.
The big argument for doing away with the law is that it cannot save you or give you eternal life, of course not. It is a school teacher that shows us the way that we should walk in life. You stand before a divide in the road, one way leads to goodness and law keeping, and those that walk that way will prosper. The evil will take the lawless road and they will perish on it. So in the end, the meek (those who submit to a higher power than their own mind), yes the meek will inherit the earth.
Psalm 1
1 Blessed is the man that walks not in the counsel of the
ungodly, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the
seat of the scornful. (Shallow thinkers who are quick to mock or disdain.)
But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he
meditate day and night. 3 And he shall be like a tree planted by
the rivers of water, that brings forth his fruit in his season; his
leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he does, he shall
prosper.
4 The ungodly are not so: but are like the chaff which the
wind drives away. 5 Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in
the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous.
6 For the Lord knows the way of the righteous: but the way of
the ungodly shall perish.
